Abu Dhabi Day Trip from Dubai: How to Plan the Perfect Day

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is only about an hour and a half by road from Dubai, yet it feels like a different world. It is calmer, greener and rich in culture, with some of the most beautiful buildings in the region. A day trip from Dubai is one of the best ways to see it, and in this guide our licensed guides share how to plan the perfect day.

How far is Abu Dhabi from Dubai?

Central Dubai and central Abu Dhabi are roughly 140 kilometres apart. By car, the journey usually takes between 1 hour 15 minutes and 2 hours, depending on traffic and where your hotel is. Most day trips leave Dubai in the morning and return in the evening, giving you about 6 to 7 hours in Abu Dhabi.

The must-see stops

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

For most visitors, this is the highlight of the day. Completed in 2007, the mosque is one of the largest in the world and a masterpiece of white marble, floral inlay, crystal chandeliers and reflective pools. It was the vision of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted a place that welcomes people of every faith.

Visitors must follow a modest dress code. Women should wear loose clothing that covers the arms and legs, along with a headscarf. Men should wear long trousers, and shirts should not be sleeveless. Visiting hours change on Fridays and during Ramadan, and since September 2026 a small entry fee applies for most visitors. Please check the official Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre website before your visit, or let your guide take care of the details.

Qasr Al Watan

Qasr Al Watan, the “Palace of the Nation”, is part of the working presidential palace compound and opened to the public in 2019. Inside you will find magnificent halls, a library about the history of the UAE and the Arab world, and exhibits on how the country is governed. The building itself, with its white granite and golden details, is worth the visit alone.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Opened in 2017 on Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is famous for its huge dome, which creates a “rain of light” as the sun shines through its layered pattern. The galleries tell the story of humanity through art and objects from many cultures. Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays.

The Corniche and Heritage Village

The Corniche is Abu Dhabi’s waterfront, with a long promenade, beaches and views of the city skyline. Nearby, the Heritage Village shows how life looked in the UAE before oil, with traditional houses, crafts and a small souq. Both make relaxed photo stops between the bigger attractions.

Ferrari World and Yas Island

If you are travelling with children or thrill-seekers, Yas Island offers Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and Yas Waterworld. These usually need a full day on their own, so we suggest a separate trip if theme parks are a priority.

A sample day trip itinerary

  • 8:00 am: Hotel pickup in Dubai
  • 9:45 am: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
  • 11:45 am: Qasr Al Watan
  • 1:30 pm: Lunch break
  • 2:45 pm: Louvre Abu Dhabi (Tuesday to Sunday) or the Corniche and Heritage Village
  • 4:45 pm: Photo stop on the way back
  • 6:30 pm: Drop-off at your hotel in Dubai

On a private tour, this plan is fully flexible. You can spend longer at the mosque, skip a museum, or add a stop that interests you.

Tips for your Abu Dhabi day trip

  • Dress modestly for the whole day, so you are ready for the mosque and the palace without changing.
  • Bring your passport or Emirates ID, as some sites may ask for identification.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk more than you expect, especially at the mosque.
  • Carry water and sunscreen, particularly between April and October.
  • Avoid Monday if the Louvre Abu Dhabi is high on your list.
  • Check Friday timings for the mosque, as visits pause around Friday prayers.

Shared tour or private tour?

A shared tour is a good value way to see the main sights with a fixed schedule. A private tour gives you your own vehicle, a licensed guide and a pace that suits your group, which is ideal for families, elderly travellers and anyone who prefers to spend more time at the places they love.
